Warner Bros. Consumer Products and Cryptozoic Entertainment today announced an all-new game for fans of Middle-earth: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Board Game. Launching in early 2013, Cryptozoic Entertainment and world-renowned game developer Reiner Knizia have created a board game that takes players through the exciting adventures of Bilbo Baggins and his thirteen Dwarves in the upcoming film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Based on the highly anticipated film from Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson, a production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM), The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Board Game brings fans on the journey to recover lost treasure.

“Every person on our team is a lifelong fan of The Hobbit, and as gamers, we’re huge fans of Reiner Knizia, making this game the perfect storm of awesome,” said Cryptozoic chief operating officer Scott Gaeta. “It’s really exciting to combine our passion for creating games with one of the greatest game designers of all time and one of the most timeless stories in modern literature. We can’t wait to share this epic journey with fans of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.”

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Board Game will be available in hobby and retail stores in early 2013. Capturing the spirit of Bilbo’s adventures, this cooperative game requires teamwork to successfully complete the journey. One to four players will employ limited resources as they trek through Middle-earth, attempting to defeat treacherous creatures and surmount obstacles leading up to a final battle. Joining forces with Dwarves, players will encounter challenges that will require a sharpened sword, quick feet or thoughtful diplomacy to overcome.
