Not sure why this is such a big deal as I’d think the majority of people will realize Ninja Turtles is still going to be a movie about Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles… I don’t know of any other mutant reptile movies currently in preproduction anywhere in Hollywoodland. Then again maybe another U.S. studio has plans on ruining Godzilla again… Who knows? Add in the fact many fans of the franchise already simplify the title to Ninja Turtles anyway and this really should be a non issue.

Producer Michael Bay has confirmed, through his blog, that the Jonathan Liebesman helmed TMNT has indeed been retitled as Ninja Turtles:

Paramount marketing changed the name. They made the title simple. The characters you all remember are exactly the same, and yes they still act like teenagers. Everything you remember, why you liked the characters, is in the movie. This script is being developed by two very smart writers, with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles. They care VERY MUCH about making this film for the fans. Everyone on this team cares about the fans. Just give them a chance. Jonathan the director, is a major fan of the whole franchise. HE’S NOT GOING TO LET YOU DOWN.

Michael

Bay is already under fire due to the announcement that the turtles are now aliens from outer space as opposed to earth bound reptiles exposed to a mysterious container of green glowing goo. Maybe this change in the origin story is adding more fuel to the dislike of the title change than it deserves. Die hard fans of TMNT are pretty upset over that revelation but, since the script is still unfinished and not a single frame of film has been shot, I’ll reserve my judgement until more concrete details emerge.
