The_Walking_Dead_IntertitleTGG follower Anthony Welsch has shared with me a post and graphic over at his website Lucky Gunner where author and artist Chris Barker explains while the Colt Python may not be the obvious choice of sidearm for Andrew Lincoln’s character Rick Grimes, on The Walking Dead, the revolver may actually hold some hidden advantages for taking on the undead while also making a statement about the television character as well. Chris also addresses some of the challenges the comic book incarnation of Grimes (nope… no spoilers from me) would face handling the gun.

Here’s a bit of the post:

Like most firearms enthusiasts, I frequently find myself resisting the urge to yell at the screen any time a movie or TV show commits some kind of gun-related “mistake”. I definitely had that urge when I saw the pilot episode of “The Walking Dead”. There’s our hero, Deputy Sheriff Rick Grimes, joining his fellow officers to try and apprehend a couple of criminals in an intense standoff. The other cops are wielding heavy-hitting 12 gauge shotguns and period-correct Glock pistols, both currently among the most common law enforcement firearms in the United States.

Then, Rick draws his gun to join them and what does he have? A beautiful six inch stainless steel .357 magnum Colt Python.

After I spent about half a second ogling the sleek lines on this timeless classic, I reverted to ravenous shouting gun-fanboy mode and spat off a dozen reasons why that character should not and would not be carrying that particular firearm. Not only did cops stop carrying revolvers back in the 90′s, but who brings a six-shot antique with them to fight off the countless shambling hordes of undead?

  1. I wish I saw this article sooner. I enjoyed it very much. Feel free to write another. Now, I have my own preferences in handguns to tackle Walkers with. The Sig Sauer P226, Glock 26, and the U.S. Beretta M9 are all fine weapons which I was officially trained, and qualified with. If I was forced to choose a revolver. I’d pick any of the 6-7 shot S&W Models. I own a few Police surplus 38’s revolvers. A 4 inch Model 10HB, and a old retired “Chief Special”. I also own one S&W 629 .44 magnum 6 inch in Stainless Steel. I prefer S&W’s only because the cylinder release feels more natural to me pushing it forward then as oppose to the Colt’s pull back. Other people may disagree. Now some old times like my father never liked nor trusted semi-auto’s. He always preferred his S&W .357. He preferred what he was comfortable with. As anyone else would do. I usually carry a Glock 26 in 9mm as my carry gun.
But, in a world like The Walking Dead. What ever you can arm yourself with and find ammo for would be idle. My opinion would be to arm yourself with a firearm that fires what ever your local law enforcement fires. Keep in mind 90% of the U.S. Military uses 9mm as well. Very few Special Forces units these days such as Navy Seals, Marines, and some Army SF groups use the.45 ACP. What would be the point of buying a 1911 that fires a .45 ACP in an area where the local L.E. carry 9mm or .40 S&W? in a SHTF situation looking for ammunition would be more of a challenge. Unless you already own one or two firearms that fire the local LE stuff and you can afford to buy more then be my guest. Local LE where I live at use 9mm. Fewer and few police officers are carrying .38 revolvers (usually older officer getting ready for retirement) and all federal agencies that I know of here all use .40 Caliber S&W.
