Sources are reporting the Weeping Angels will make their return to the Who universe this upcoming season with what could possibly be the biggest angel of all: The Statue of Liberty! As Doctor Who prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary, there couldn’t be a larger set piece for one of the angels than lady liberty herself. Details about the upcoming season are sketchy at best but we do know Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill (Amy Pond and Rory Williams) are set to leave the series and the scheduling of the newest season indicates five episodes will air in 2012 with a break for the now yearly Doctor Who Christmas special (where the current Doctor, Matt Smith, should be joined by a new companion played by Jenna-Louise Coleman) to be followed by the remaining eight episodes of the series following in early 2013.

At this point it’s a safe bet episode five will see the departure of Gillan and Darvill and what better way to have their characters exit on a high note  – or low, if producer Steven Moffat is to be believed as he claims ”Not everyone gets out alive. And I mean it this time!” in the final confrontation with the Weeping Angels – than in a Who story set in New York City including a battle with a 300+ foot tall angel? Perhaps even based in 1886 just prior to the statue’s dedication? Something of this scope would probably be broken into a two parter for sure.

Only time will tell, and this story may have more smoke than fire, but we’ll be sure to bring Who fans more details as they become available!
