The Avengers rocked the biggest weekend opening in box office history – not taking inflation into consideration – with an estimated $200.3 million for the Joss Whedon directed superhero movie. The total blew past the previous record of $169.2 million set by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 last year.  Marvel Studios even set a record of their own with the midnight screenings with $18.7 million which carried over into an industry all time second best place Friday total of $80.5 million. Saturday’s box office is estimated at $69.7 million on Saturday and another estimated $50.1 million on Sunday. If these numbers hold true, both would set records for their respective days of the week.

Critics are chiming in with scores of positive reviews which has lead to  a stellar 93% rating with Rotten Tomatoes and word of mouth audience reviews are coming in at an “A+” as well; looks like The Avengers may turn out to be an even bigger monster hit than anyone could have imagined.

With these kind of numbers helping to bail out a sagging box office this year, one has to wonder what we’ll see from the anxiously awaited The Dark Knight Rises later this Summer…

  1. Just an update… Disney low balled the numbers and the total is $207,438,708 for the weekend. The Avengers did set the record for both Saturday and Sunday takes.
