What has to be no doubt one of the most famous radio stories of all time (outside of Orson Welles’ War of the Worlds) has to be Sorry, Wrong Number. The radio play was performed eight times from 1943 through 1960 with Agnes Moorehead giving a one woman tour-de-force each time out. Funny enough, the first time Lucille Fletcher’s script was performed for the East Coast feed of Suspense, the final line was flubbed thereby making the ending rather confusing. What we’re about to listen to is the subsequent West Coast performance which is pulled off without a hitch.

While this isn’t a horror story in the truest sense – there are no supernatural elements whatsoever – it’s still one hell of a barnburner. I’d have to say if you’re an invalid it’s probably in your best interest not to come across as what seems to be an insufferable shrew; especially if you’ve just overheard two parties plotting a murder on the telephone…

Here’s an all-time classic with Sorry, Wrong Number from Suspense as it aired on May 25th, 1943.

Lucille Fletcher had loads of success writing radio scripts and really knew how to light a fire under that slow burn. So much in fact I’ll be sharing another of her programs later this weekend.
