From Full Moon:

Revenge is served on a spear when dirty cops brutally murder DEVIN, an innocent African-American med student. Devin’s soul is magically transferred into the body of an action figure named OOGA BOOGA. Armed only with his tribal weapon and the help of his old girlfriend, DONNA, Ooga Booga takes to the streets and trailer parks to find the men who stole his bright future away from him. The bodies begin to pile up as Ooga Booga slices and dices his way through crooked cops, meth heads and demented city officials in order to clear his name. Racists beware! You won’t even have enough time to scream, “Ooga Booga!”

Ooga Booga 1It’s not very often I can write a review of a film so bad the movie almost bears renting just so you can commiserate with me in the sheer awfulness. The film of which I write is the latest from the relaunched Full Moon Horror line, Ooga Booga. Nominally written by Kent Roudebush and directed by Charles Band, the tale focuses on the soul of a murdered African American medical student possessing an extremely non-politically correct doll as the same said doll embarks on a revenge fueled murder spree. Granted, those firmly in the sights of the demon Rankin and Bass reject are most deserving of a terrible fate as they’re the lowest of low racist scum.

Normally, I can say I’m pretty forgiving of movies (hell I actually liked Iron Sky for what it was) but every aspect of Ooga Booga screams cheap, cheesy, downright dreadful, or a combination of all three…

Ooga Booga’s dialogue is simply dreadful and plays out as if written by a seventh grader on the downside of a weekend of binge drinking. Scenes ramble along without regard to pacing, plot or even an attempt at making sense while the acting is wooden at best and seemingly straight out of Plan 9 from Outer Space at worst. Plus the less said about the special effects, the better.

In other words, I’ve seen raw video posted to YouTube which looks better thought out and executed than this dreck.

I’m going to keep this review spoiler free – this flick is plenty spoiled already – but the major let downs in this snore fest of a horror film aren’t even the aforementioned affronts to filmmaking. First there aren’t any good scenes of gore and mayhem even as that’s what the audience for these kinds of flicks is paying their money to see. Above all else people expect a touch of horror or grue in a gruesome horror film but you won’t find much of that here.

OogaBooga2I’ve always been used to Full Moon releasing movies, while not necessarily classics of any sort, which are at least fun to watch with your friends on a slow Saturday night. Yet there’s a real mean spirit to Ooga Booga which can’t just be explained away as some snarky commentary on racism or a total misfire at twenty first century Blaxploitation; the characters live in a “little city” which seems only populated by terribly bigoted white folk hell bent on dolling out misery to anyone with a complexion darker than whipped cream. I’d be hard pressed to believe the two African American characters wouldn’t have packed their bags to leave this hell hole by the time they learned to walk let alone survive the obvious nightly lynchings which surely take place.

Nothing about Ooga Booga is fun by any stretch.

On the upside Stacy Keach chews the scenery in the usual Keach playing skeevy way and Karen Black shows up for a rather poorly executed homage to her “Amelia” segment from Trilogy of Terror. Also of note is the appearance of adult film star Siri as a prostitute who seemingly is only on the scene to display her rather impressive frontal assets. I’ll be the first to mention Siri makes her scene nearly bearable more because I’m a fan of voluptuous women as opposed to anything else taking place. Watching the scene makes me wonder if the porn actress was directed to emote a crystal meth addict by channeling a rabbit; I couldn’t decide if I should focus on the bountiful boobs or the constantly twitching nose.

Summary
Overall, Ooga Booga might be worth a buck rental from RedBox if you plan on gathering your friends for a night of enjoying your favorite mind altering substance while riffing on really bad movies. Otherwise you can always watch this nasty little flick just so I’m not alone in my misery…
