starwarsdarkhorseThe rumors are flying over the Internet that Dark Horse Comics will be losing their license to publish Star Wars comics after their current agreement comes to an end next year. The reason? Because Disney now owns the rights to Star Wars, and also owns a little comic book company called Marvel Comics.

According to the website Blue Sky Disney:

“The Suits in the know have determined that no new contracts will be given to Dark Horse after the current ones expire. So all new projects after 2013 will be handled internally by Marvel.”

This is all rumor at this point, as is obvious from the phrase “The suits in the know”, nothing official has emerged from any of the companies involved. It does seem like a logical step though, the only question I have is if the license that Dark Horse has actually expires next year. Dark Horse has published some of the best Star Wars comics ever made, and although it is unfair to compare them to the lame Marvel Star Wars title of the 80’s (it was a different comic world back then) comparisons will be made regardless.

Dark Horse has expanded the Star Wars universe greatly over the years, even working with book publishers to stay within the continuity established by Lucasfilm. Will Marvel continue this? Let’s hope so. And let’s also hope that Marvel keeps up the same high standards of art and writing that Dark Horse has since 1991.

Is it just rumor? Stay Tuned
