Marvel Comics announced yesterday that Astomishing X-Men #51 would feature something that had never taken place in the long history of the company’s titles: A gay wedding.

Canadian-born mutant Northstar will get hitched to his longtime boyfriend Kyle in the issue, which hits stores in June. Marvel has been teasing the event ever since a “Save the Date” poster appeared in March and the company had informed retailers in advance that Marvel “had secured mainstream coverage both on-air and in print for something that has never been seen” in an event in the pages of Astonishing X-Men.

This won’t be the first mainstream comic company to portray a same sex marriage though as Archie Comics, of all companies, married off the character of Kevin Keller this past January.

Not to be left in the dust, DC Comics has announced one of their characters will come out of the closet in June as well. Rumor currently has it that The Flash is the character in question.

  1. Lame.

No wedding of any type should be on the cover of xmen.

  2. I would be quite surprised if it was The Flash; more likely a second-string character like The Green Arrow.

That would be the smart play for DC – if it’s a hit, they are on the upshoot; if it flops, a former (and future potential) front-rank hero doesn’t take the hit.

    • Good point Steve. The Flash is just the rumor and we certainly know it won’t be one of the DC trinity.

  3. Well, it’s official and I was close – it’s Alan Scott. Alan Scott was the original (Golden Age) Green Lantern (1940) as created by Martin Nodell.

It’s a low-risk move for DC because Silver Age collectors today identify Hal Jordan as the Green Lantern. Plus, in the current DC Universe, Alan Scott occupies Earth 2 and is not a prominent figure from what I’m told.

Still, the initial reports don’t know the difference, so once again the ignorance of the mass media is readily apparant. Jump on a story first, get the facts later

DC needs to do something to boost their sagging sales, so I’d imagine they have other changes in the works, as well. Best of luck to them.
