Our friends over at Gamewright have reason to be excited! Here’s the latest:

Forbidden Island, Gamewright’s smash hit cooperative family adventure game, has been nominated for the Spiel des Jahres (Game of the Year) in Germany. The Spiel des Jahres is one of the most coveted gaming awards, often referred to as the Oscars© of the industry. Forbidden Island is the first Gamewright game ever to receive such a nomination and is one of three finalists in contention for the award, which will be announced on June 27, 2011.

“We are beyond thrilled that Forbidden Island is nominated for the Spiel des Jahres,” says Jason Schneider, marketing and product development manager for Gamewright. “Ever since I’ve known about the award it’s been a dream that one of our games would someday be nominated. We look forward to hearing the outcome on June 27. In the meantime, we’re honored to be among the cream of the crop in the game industry.”

In Forbidden Island (2-4 players, Ages 10+, $17.99) players act as a team of fearless adventurers and work together to capture four sacred treasures from the ruins of an undiscovered paradise. The object is to collect the treasures and escape before the island sinks into the watery abyss.

Forbidden Island was invented by renowned cooperative game designer, Matt Leacock, and was released by Gamewright in 2010. Gamewright licensed the German rights to major German publisher, Schmidt Spiele. The game has earned eight domestic awards since its release, including the highly regarded Mensa Select Seal, Disney FamilyFun Magazine’s Game of the Year (2010) and MTV Geek’s Top Board Game of 2010. In its short tenure, the game has risen to one of the most popular titles in Gamewright’s catalog.
