‘The Mummy’ Dead on Arrival with U.S. Moviegoers

It came as no surprise that it didn’t take a weekend plague of locusts to keep U.S. audiences away in droves from the Universal Pictures reboot of The Mummy. The trailers for the film had bomb written all over them and even the diminishing star power of Tom Cruise couldn’t pull in more than $12 million in Friday’s domestic box office. Variety projects the movie to pull in an estimated $30 million over the weekend in the midst of a slew of negative reviews; the film scores a “rotten” rating of 17% at Rotten Tomatoes.

Hope isn’t completely lost for Universal’s plans for a Dark Universe though (Bride of Frankenstein was recently announced for a 2019 release) as the international box office might bail The Mummy out yet. Early indications show the film should recoup its $125 million production costs over the weekend with Chinese moviegoers leading the box office charge at around $52 million in ticket sales. Still, not overly great news for a flick which had been planned as a franchise tent pole.
