What to Expect from The Witcher Season Two

The Witcher is either the most or second most watched 2019 original release after Stranger Things 3 on Netflix (depending on what source you believe) which took even the streaming giant itself by surprise. A second season of the fantasy series was green lit over a month before the first aired and, of course, fans are clamoring for more. Here are some items of note to keep in mind for season two, mainly from showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich.

• • • Henry Cavill returns as Geralt of Rivia, Freya Allan reprises the role of Ciri, and Anya Chalotra will once again play sorceress Yennefer. Jodhi May will appear again as Queen Calanthe.
• • • Season two probably won’t arrive until early 2021 according to Hissrich on a January 7th AMA on Reddit.
• • • Andrzej Sapkowski’s novel Blood of Elves (the first “saga”) will provide much of the story arc of the second season but so will unused season one elements of the short stories The Last Wish and The Sword of Destiny.
• • • According to the aforementioned AMA, more linear storytelling devices will be used in the next season, although there will still be multiple timelines, as many season one viewers were confused by the constant time jumps.
• • • In a Collider interview Hissrich has indicated the series could continue for multiple seasons: “It’s a delicate dance because you have to be able to have a conceit of where you’re going. Your stories need an end point. They need a direction to aim towards. “I’m sure, at some point, that I said I could write seven seasons but I’m also sure that I said I could write 20 seasons. I will continue writing this series, as long as it makes sense to write this series. That means taking, organically, from the books and allowing story to flow, but then also allowing the story to end when it needs to end.”
• • • Although the Twitterverse would no doubt love to see it, there’s no word yet if Mark Hamill has or will be cast as Geralt’s mentor Vesemir.
