The fallout from Batman vs Superman continues as The Hollywood Reporter is indicating a shake up is taking place at Warner Bros. A new division, DC Films, is being formed to produce future movies based on the DC superhero properties. DC writer/exec Geoff Johns has been named as co-head of DC Films alongside current Warners executive vice president Jon Berg. Johns, who had already taken up the task of heading the upcoming comic reboot event Rebirth this summer, will not be leaving the publishing side but will add his position at DC Films to his growing list of titles.
THR summarizes a laundry list of changes regarding current and future DC movie projects as Warners attempts to wrest box office domination away from Marvel; BvS has grossed $870 million worldwide since its March 25 release (offset by a $300 million budget) while Captain America: Civil War is rapidly approaching $1 billion worldwide in less than two weeks at theaters.
Comic fans, and audiences in general, have been less than enamored by the latest crop of DC related films and the shake up is further evidence there may be trouble brewing for the upcoming Suicide Squad (although fan reaction to the trailers has been immensely positive) which has already undergone extensive reshoots following the lackluster critical response to BvS.
Here’s hoping Johns and Berg can right a floundering ship as the DC stable of heroes is certainly deserving of the same sort of jaw dropping, crowd pleasing treatment as their Marvel counterparts.
