Grey Fox Games launched their Kickstarter for the unique looking area control game City of Gears today and the project is already nearing 500% funding in its first seven hours. The game looks to have a cool steampunk vibe and I certainly think the game has an interesting design style. City of Gears is for two to four players and plays in about 45 minutes. You can reserve a copy of the retail edition of the game at the $49 pledge level and the special founders edition for a $59 pledge – shipping is not included. The project runs through March 15th with delivery estimated for November.
From Grey Fox:
Grey Fox Games is excited to announce the launch of City of Gears on Kickstarter. City of Gears is an area control game for up to 4 players. From their factories, players must race to claim ownership over the magnificent ruins of an abandoned clockwork metropolis. Each city is unique and waiting to be uncovered, with only nine city tiles used in each game out of at least 18 options. On their turn, players will produce a number of resources in their factory, using them to deploy their automaton workers, develop their factory, discover new parts of the city or even sabotage other players. The person who can earn the most prestige before Opening Day will get credit as the one who brought the City of Gears back to life.
City of Gears was originally designed by Chris Leder (Roll for It) in 2012 for a contest on The Game Crafter, winning the site’s Steampunk Design Challenge. The game was at one point slated to be a part of the Dice Tower Essentials line, before making its way to Grey Fox Games last year. City of Gears is co-designed by Daryl Andrews (Sagrada). The game plays in about an hour, with an uncertain round timer adding suspense as the game can end at any time. City of Gears features art by Anthony Cournoyer.
