The Goon Sets Kickstarter Record for Animation Funding

I’m sure I’ve made it quite apparent I’m a huge fan of Eric Powell’s The Goon, from Dark Horse Comics, and would love to see the animated film project finally make it’s way into production. Thus the news not only did the Kickstarter project I previously wrote about secure it’s funding goal but also set a record for crowd funding for an animated film – by raising $441,900 from 7,576 backers – is a good sign one of the studios may finally bite on green lighting the feature.

In an interview with MTVGeek’s Charles Webb, Blur Studios’ Jeff Fowler summed up why one of the big studios should get on board, “The same reason it makes a great comic book is the same reason it would make a great film,” said Fowler, “There’s nothing out there like it. Eric’s world doesn’t have any kind of parallel in comics or film.”

As a fan of the comic I can surely agree with Fowler’s assessment. Now we can only keep our fingers crossed the story reel – which the funding helps create – will open some bigwig’s eyes and in the next few years we can kick back in a darkened theater and see the bizarre and twisted, yet strangely humorous and touching, world of The Goon on the big screen.
