If the great “Fables” is Playboy, “Wonderland” is Hustler. The series is pure id, loaded to the seams with over-the-top adolescent fantasy artwork and cathartic violence. The pages pop with the sheer joy of the subversive creators. In this comic, you really can judge a book by its cover, because the inside is just as raunchy as the lustrous, lascivious cover art.The stories are loosely based on characters from the “Alice in Wonderland” book- but in name only. The authors go on a free-for-all, in a million directions with each of the characters, leaving nothing sacred. The stories are a cross between “Twilight Zone” macabre morality tales, and “Fables” modern re-telling of fairy tales.Obviously this book isn’t for kids, but when it comes to sex, the twisted writers titillate more than they actually show. This comic is clean enough for the average teenager. This series doesn’t get the respect in comic shops that it deserves, in my opinion. I could go on about how the writers use the hyper-sexualized fantasy villainesses and silly violence to parody the fairy tale genre, but I’ll spare you.If you love reading comics of men in spandex saving the world, or serious graphic novels, this guilty confection might not be for you. If you just want a few minutes of cathartic violence and sexy drawings with clever stories, you’ll love this book.
Writers who have written about the Holocaust have combined the tales with their memoirs, as Jane Yolen in her Briar Rose .
