Cubicle 7 Launches ‘World War Cthulhu: Cold War’ Kickstarter

World War Cthulhu: Cold War (Cubicle 7 Entertainment)Hot on the heels of two very successful runs on Kickstarter, Cubicle 7 has turned to crowdfunding once again to bring the latest in the World War Cthulhu series to print. Mystery and horror in the 1950s and 1960s are the subject at hand in World War Cthulhu: Cold War. The project is already fully funded and you can reserve a copy of the core book, as well as the player’s guide, for a pledge of £40.

From Cubicle 7:

Following on from their first two smash-hit Kickstarters, Cthulhu Britannica: London and The Lone Wolf Adventure Game, Cubicle 7 Entertainment Ltd have announced that their latest project – World War Cthulhu: Cold War – is now live on Kickstarter!

World War Cthulhu: Cold War is a new Call of Cthulhu setting full of thrilling espionage, tense horror and sudden betrayal set at the height of the Cold War in the 1970s. The tangled webs of the spymasters tear and rejoin, double and triple agents make their moves and counter-moves, and it’s hard to be sure which side you’re really working for. Nuclear destruction hangs over everyone, and a few people at the heart of western intelligence continue their personal battle against the insidious influence of a much older enemy…

Fans of the novels of John Le Carré (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy et al), shows like Homeland,The Americans and The Sandbaggers, or comics like Greg Rucka’s Queen & Country will find a lot to like in this Call of Cthulhu setting.

The Cold War setting forms part of the wider World War Cthulhu line, which covers a range of conflicts. You don’t need any other World War Cthulhu products to play Cold War – it is a standalone setting – but it forms a part of the over-arching World War Cthulhu narrative. You will need a copy of the Call of Cthulhu Rulebook though.

The Kickstarter runs until Tuesday, 21st July, and there are some great books to be had as part of the campaign – including a deluxe, limited-edition copy of the core setting book and four supplements.

  1. That looks like an excellent Kickstarter. Great vid too. They’ve really got it worked out. I like the whole idea of the secret Cthulu war underneath all the others. Fantastic for tense and gripping games.
I’ve been wondering about the virtue of releasing a book as a deluxe edition straight off the bat. Do you think that’s a good idea for other indie designers without such a large following as Cubicle 7? I’m sure they can pull it off (in fact, I can see they already have, and well done to them!) – but could a new designer commit to that successfully? What do you think?

    • I think if an indie designer has a solid design lined up then, with crowdfunding support, they could release a deluxe edition. It all depends on the budget that can be put together, I suppose. I like C7 a lot so I don’t bust their chops much for using Kickstarter although I still believe the platform should be for small developers and not established companies.
