Four new games are in development at AEG and three of them will be themed in a shared setting. These are new departures for AEG and, just from the glimpses I’ve seen, look like nothing released previously by the company. Here’s what we know about them so far…
The first title is Smash Up, which is planned for a GenCon release. Coming from the mind of designer Paul Peterson this will be a “shufflebuilding cardgame.” You might wonder what shuffle building is and the easiest explanation is each player will choose from eight prebuilt decks. The player then shuffles the two decks together and begins play. A variety of memes are included in the game like ninjas, dinosaurs, pirates, zombies, robots and more to whet your appetite. Each faction deck has its own special power, such as the zombies’ ability to rise from the grave, or the pirates being able to manipulate player movement.
We’ll be looking for Smash Up come August.
Three other new boardgames, coming in October, each inhabit the shared game world of the city state of Tempest which is described as a Renaissance Roman setting. The foundations of each game are unique, with a different look and feel for each, but share a common set of characters and locations. Mercante may be along the lines of a resource trading game, while Dominare is built around political control and influence. Details over all are pretty slim at this point.
Even less is known about the third title in development outside of a possible working title of Courtier.
As soon as we have more concrete info about these new AEG designs we’ll get the word out straight away!
