Clerks: The Animated Series to Return in 2013?

Clerks The Animated SeriesCould it be that 2013 will see a return of Kevin Smith’s Clerks: The Animated Series? That’s what Smith has tweeted recently promising after his hockey saga Hit Somebody shoots and wraps, he’ll be stepping away from the camera to take time and help independent filmmakers get their movies produced. I suppose that doesn’t mean he’s going to ignore the small screen as he has also tweeted he and Miramax are working toward revitalizing his animated show based on the film cult classic, Clerks.

Although six episodes of the original cartoon were produced (and ultimately released on DVD in 2001) only two episodes aired before ABC pulled the plug in 2000. Sorry to say that’s the same number of episodes that ABC aired of the horrendous cross dressing “comedy” Work It this past January; rancid crap like Work It shares the same distinction as Clerks: The Animated Series? Two episodes? For shame!

Kevin Smith had planned a DVD movie called “Clerks: Sell Out” about Dante and Randal making a film in the Quick Stop, but when Harvey and Bob Weinstein left Miramax in the hands of Disney, Smith refused to work with the House of Mouse without the support of the Weinsteins. Since Miramax’s current owners have partnered with the Weinsteins, there is now a greater likelihood for the series to return in some form or another.

No word yet where this new version of the adventures of Dante, Randal, Jay, and Silent Bob will air. We may see the series on network, cable, or (possibly more likely) through an exclusive streaming deal with a company like Hulu or Netflix.
