Kevin Smith recently let the cat out of the bag regarding a project he has in development with MGM. The project in question? A Buckaroo Banzai television series! On his Hollywood Babble-On podcast, Smith revealed some of the details of the series such as the first season to be based on the film itself while a second season would tackle the Buckaroo Banzai Against the World Crime League storyline – which was teased at the end of the 1984 movie but never produced.
For those living under a rock, the film The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension! landed with a resounding thud when it was originally hit theaters in 1984 (although my friends and I loved it!) but obtained a true cult following once it hit home video. Buckaroo Banzai was a movie way surely ahead of its time with a plethora of one liners, geeky inside jokes, and science fiction craziness rollicking along at a mile a minute as the Doc Savage-like titular hero and his team of specialists try to thwart aliens living amongst us.
Smith indicates right now the series needs a network home but there is interest from multiple parties.
I for one would love to see Buckaroo Banzai get the television treatment as its certainly a property perfectly suited for our current state of geekdom!
