The Gaming Gang October Spooktacular 2022 – BBC Radio 7: At the Mountains of Madness Part One (2010)

Tonight, and for the next few nights, we’re going to change gears a little on The Spooktacular and give a listen to a far more modern recording than what we’re used to exploring. The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown. So wrote H.P. Lovecraft in his extended 1927 essay Supernatural Horror in Literature. Perhaps no other short story author of the weird and macabre has ever tapped into that fear more than Lovecraft. And, in my opinion, no Lovecraft story dives deeper into the unknown and unknowable than the novella At the Mountains of Madness, first serialized in the February, March, and April 1936 issues of Astounding Stories.

Tonight let’s begin the tale of the ill-fated Pabodie Expedition as told by one of its leaders, Professor William Dyer.

So turn out the lights, sit back, and give a listen to part one of At the Mountains of Madness, masterfully narrated by Richard Coyle, as it aired on BBC Radio 7 back in 2010.
