From Tom Tykwer and Andy and Lana Wachowski comes Warner Brothers Studios genre-hopping and centuries-spanning epic, Cloud Atlas. There’s been quite a bit of buzz about the film of late and here’s the first chance we’ve had to see extended footage of any kind. Based on the David Mitchell novel, the film appears to stay true to the structure of the book: Six stories of the past, present, and future which intertwine into underlying common threads – some more obvious than others. The novel uses a rather unique framework as it begins with the first half of the first tale and then jumps to the first half of the second, and continues on in this manner until the entire sixth story is told in full at the center of the novel. Then the stories play out in reverse wherein the book concludes with the second half of the first tale. As you can see from the trailer, the movie looks stunning although how easy the storylines will be to follow remains to be seen.
Cloud Atlas opens October 26th and stars Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Doona Bae, Ben Whishaw, James D’Arcy, Xun Zhou, Keith David, David Gyasi, Susan Sarandon and Hugh Grant. I’ll make a bet you’ll watch the trailer the first time due to the star studded cast and quickly watch it again in an attempt to try and figure out exactly what’s going on…
Or at least that’s what I did.
