Hot on the heels of signing an exclusive movie and television contract with Marvel Studios, which runs through 2015, filmmaker Joss Whedon has received the go ahead to produce a pilot for ABC based on Marvel’s Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Or at least that’s our assumption since the title of the series is S.H.I.E.L.D. Can the casting of Samuel L. Jackson be far behind?
Let’s hope David Hasselhoff is currently committed to another project… Any project…
This will be the first time Whedon will return to live action on the small screen since the conclusion of Dollhouse and he’s set to co-write as well as possibly direct. Joining Whedon will be his familiar collaborators brother Jed Whedon and his wife Maurissa Tancharoen. Also on board for the project are Jeffrey Bell and Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb. According to Deadline, “Production on the pilot, which marks the first live-action Marvel TV project to get a green light, will start immediately.”
Although there are plenty of Marvel projects currently in the works (The Hulk and Jessica Jones are two that have been percolating for a while) S.H.I.E.L.D. is the first series to be greenlit by Marvel and ABC parent company Disney since the House of Mouse acquired the House of Ideas.
Of course the pilot has to be good enough to be picked up as a series but the announcement S.H.I.E.L.D. is going into immediate production guns blazing bodes well for more superhero fare to return to television soon.
