Today happens to be my birthday and as a bit of a treat let’s give a listen to a radio program which actually aired on my birthday. Of course it just happened to be my tenth birthday and I remember hunkering down in my bed, with an AM radio and ear piece, listening to this very episode of CBS Radio Mystery Theater when the witching hour struck.
This tale is based on the classic Charles Dickens short story Trial for Murder. It was originally published under the title To Be Taken with a Grain of Salt as a chapter in Dr. Marigold’s Prescriptions in an extra Christmas volume of the weekly literary magazine, All the Year Round. Many scholars now believe the story was written as a collaboration between Dickens and his son in law Charles Allston Collins because the presentation of the ghost is far different than those found in other works by Dickens.
We’ve got another recording of CBSRMT which includes a few minutes before the start of the broadcast and after the episode ends as well. I always dig recordings like this because they’re a bit of a time capsule of the day these shows aired.
Turn out the lights and get ready for a ghostly mystery with Trial for Murder on CBS Radio Mystery Theater as it aired October 24th, 1977.

On a quick side note, most visitors to TGG probably don’t know I ran an old time radio website quite a few years back and I have tens of thousands of radio shows in my collection. Each of the programs I’ll share during the Spooktacular have had their audio personally cleaned up by me to remove many of the pops, crackles, and hisses so common with old time radio recordings. These aren’t pristine by any means but keep in mind the original broadcasts you’ll be hearing are anywhere from fifty to eighty years old…
