The success of both Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist lead to a renewal of interest (and concern) in the possible existence in satanic cults and demonic possession. It also didn’t hurt that the early 1970’s marked a period of uncertainty and malaise in the U.S. Leading people to question if there weren’t more malevolent supernatural forces arrayed against hard working folk. As CBS Radio Mystery Theater neared the close of it’s first October run of broadcasts, it was certainly in tune with what’s considered to be the satanic panic of the 1970s.
