The latest historical game on the horizon from Academy Games obliterated its funding goal during its first day on Kickstarter. 878 Vikings – Invasions of England places two to four players in command of 9th Century warriors vying for control of the isle. The crowdfunding project has reached over $165k in twenty four hours, thus unlocking a slew of stretch goals and extra goodies for backers.
On a personal note, Academy makes fantastic historically based games (both the Conflict of Heroes and Birth of America series come immediately to mind) and 878 Vikings – Invasions of England looks to be another winner. You can reserve a copy of the game, and applicable stretch goals, at an early bird $60.00 pledge level through March 20th. The base pledge will be $65.00, once the special ends, through April 17th with delivery of the game estimated for this summer.
From Academy Games:
878 Vikings is an area control game in which 2 – 4 players play as the invading Vikings or the English nobles who are trying to withstand the invasion. Viking players control the Norsemen Viking freemen and the fearless Viking shock troops known as Berserkers. The English control the King’s Housecarls and the landholding Thegn noblemen.
Players for each side work together in order to coordinate their strategies. The English start the game controlling all of England, but then the Viking players invade from the sea to strike deep into English territory! Players decide when to end the game by calling for the Treaty of Wedmore. The team controlling the most cities by the end of that round wins the game.
