You don’t run across too many games set in ancient MesoAmerica but Ares Games is looking for a fourth quarter release for Aztlán, which tasks three to four players to each lead their tribe to grow and prosper under the watchful eye of vengeful Aztec deities. The title will be the first euro developed by the company and is set to debut at this October’s Essen Spiel 2012.

From Ares:

Ares Games announces its debut in the Euro game category with its upcoming board game Aztlán, created by the Italian game designer Leo Colovini and scheduled to be released in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Aztlán is a strategy game with bluffing and challenging mechanics, for 3 to 4 players, set in the mythical land of Aztlán, ancestral home of the Nahuatl (Aztec) people. In Aztlán, four tribes strive to survive and prosper, under the scrutiny of the Aztec Gods themselves.

The game develops during five different epochs, each one divided in four phases. Players try to conquer the largest realm, using an intriguing and highly interactive mechanic. In each epoch, the tribes have uneven and secret strengths, so the players’ strategy must be based on intuition and bluff.

When winning a conflict, you are faced with the difficult choice between eliminating your enemies, or deciding to co-exist with them. Peaceful co-existence brings the opportunity to develop your own civilization and gain future advantages, but can you trust your opponent?

The game’s designer, Leo Colovini, is the author of famous games such as Inkognito, Carolus Magnus, Cartagena and Carcassone: the Discovery. The graphics of Aztlán were created by the artist Drew Baker, known for his work in the Legend of the Five Rings card game. He has also contributed to the Dungeons and Dragons RPG and Dragon magazine.

“We are very happy of publishing Aztlán. This will enrich our catalog with a great Euro-style game from Leo Colovini, one of the most renowned Italian game designers. It’s an easy to learn game system, but with a deep strategy, which will please different players’ profiles”, said Christoph Cianci, CEO of Ares Games.

The development of the game is at an advanced stage and Ares Games plans to release Aztlán at Essen Spiel 2012 – October 18-21, in Germany.
