Reiner Knizia Designing Two New Hobbit Games

Through his Twitter account, famed game designer Reiner Knizia has revealed he is in the midst of designing two new games based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. The release dates for the titles will correspond with the two Peter Jackson directed films based on the classic book with the first game, titled The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Board Game, hitting stores in spring of 2013 to be followed by The Hobbit: There and Back Again the following winter.

No details have emerged as of yet of what either game may entail but the tone of the tweets would lead one to believe the designs are completely new and not simply a rehash of Knizia’s 2010 The Hobbit Board Game from Fantasy Flight Games. I’m a bit leery of these two games because Knizia has a recent habit of simply renaming and retheming previous designs for release but, until I see otherwise, I’ll take him at his work these are completely fresh and new.
