Traveller: Customizable Card Game Now Up on Kickstarter

Traveller: Customizable Card Game (Horizon Games)I have to say I’ve always had a soft spot for the venerable science fiction roleplaying game Traveller. It just happened to be one of the first RPGs I ever owned and, while the system may not be everyone’s cup of tea, the game universe was always pretty cool. Now the folks at Horizon Games are aiming to bring to the masses a card game set in the Third Imperium. The Traveller: Customizable Card Game will allow up to four players to take command of their own starships as they explore the galaxy. The game is up for funding through January 9th, 2017 and you can reserve ship decks for two players at the $40 pledge level.

On a side note, I think Horizon would be better served by posting a video of the actual game and its components rather than just rolling out a talking head (as seen below) to tell us about the game. Oh, well…

From Horizon Games:

Traveller is a card game adaptation of Marc Miller’s classic Science-Fiction role-playing game. Players assume the role of ship Captains plying the mains of the Third Imperium.

The game has been designed to accommodate 2-4 players, but it also supports solo play and we anticipate releasing special solo play scenarios and game modes.  Single and two-player games should last about 30 minutes.  Three or four will go for 45-60 minutes.

Traveller is non-collectable. There’s no random allocation of cards, and no rarities. Every product is a fixed set, so you always know exactly what you’re getting.

Our basic mechanics are an icon-driven race game, with ample opportunities to interact with, and even engage in piracy against, other players. All Captains must also contend with a hostile galaxy and the looming threat of insolvency.

A Ship Deck comes with 81 cards:

1 Ship Card

20 Adventure Cards

60 Captain’s Cards

Enough cards to begin your Traveller exploits.

Backers may choose between one of two Ship Decks, the Scout or the Free Trader.  Each deck is distinct, containing its own list of cards, though some may be common to them both.

Should any additional Ship Decks become unlocked from Stretch Goals, players may select on of those instead.

Thanks for taking a look at our campaign. We’re thrilled there’s so much interest in seeing game play, and we’re working on the most effective way to get that info to everyone, as soon as we can.
