Yesterday White Wolf Publishing announced to the crowd at the World of Darkness – Berlin convention that the all new edition of the venerable roleplaying game in the works is definitely slated for a Q1 2018 release. Perhaps more interesting than the confirmation of a release quarter is the reveal the lead designer for the RPG is none other than fellow Chicagoan Ken Hite. Gamers should be intimately familiar with Hite’s work on such well received games as Runequest 4th Edition, The Dresden Files, Trail of Cthulhu, as well as his weekly podcast series (with Robin D. Laws) Ken and Robin Talk About Stuff. The rest of the team has been announced as Mary Lee as Art Director, Karim Muammar as Playtest Designer/Editor in Chief, Martin Ericsson as Lead Storyteller, and Jason Carl as Producer.
Regardless of how you might feel about Vampire: The Masquerade – some believe the system revolutionized roleplaying while others feel the game nearly sounded a death knell for the hobby – you have to admit the game was immensely popular back in the day. Personally, I enjoyed a lot of the metaplot involved in the system and the fiction behind the setting but simply never was jazzed enough about the mechanics to run the game. Still, in my book, it’s always nice to see classic RPGs get nice shiny revamps and I think the system will be in good hands with Hite.
