They say that getting there is half the fun.  HA!  We picked up our rental car yesterday, a Dodge Charger.  My wife and I, teenage son and daughter, and our little girl who is almost four were getting ready to head off to Arkham Nights at the Fantasy Flight Games event center in Roseville, Minnesota.  We are making it a mini-vacation, and so we rented a car for the eight hour drive up to the Twin Cities.

We had almost everything ready, and the plan was to be on the road by 4am Thursday, so that once we hit the hotel we would still have all day Thursday to have some fun.  I was up by 3:30 and by 4:30 we were in the car and ready to go.  We made it about four blocks when the baby started to feel sick.  Now we know she gets carsick, but we didn’t anticipate the huge difference between riding in her car seat in a Dodge Charger, and her normal car seat in our minivan.  She was in bad shape.  We gave her kids Dramamine, but she spewed it up.  The poor baby was sick for the first 5 hours on and off, until we were sure that it was safe to give her another dose.  So we stopped for lunch, gave her some more medicine, and waited an hour.  That did the trick, she was fine the rest of the way and we pulled into the hotel around 1:30 PM.

Unfortunately, my wife was tired from the long trip with a sick baby and needed to lie down.   We saw that the hotel had a nice pool, but we neglected to bring any swimwear (Except myself, I am always prepared).  Our first quest was to find cheap swimwear, so the kids and I headed off to a local thrift store, and although the baby found many old toys to play with, there was nothing that could even be construed as swimwear present.  I understand of course, I mean we are in Minnesota at the end of October, not much call for swimming.    I did remember to check the old games at the thrift store to see if there were any hidden treasures, but nothing caught my interest.  There was some old Parcheesi and Aggrevation games but I didn’t care about that.

Well, we had passed a Walmart on the way to the thrift store, so we headed there next.  Good old Walmart.  There was no swimwear, but we found some clearance shorts and t-shirts, and a swim ring for my baby girl for less than 10 bucks total.

We headed back to the hotel and hit the pool.  There was not another person in the pool or hot tub area, so we had it all to ourselves, which was cool.  We had a great time and then went back to the room to wake up my honey and get some dinner.  We ended up at Outback steak house and it was excellent, but expensive.  At least the breakfast is free at the hotel.

Now we’re all watching “How to Train your Dragon” while I write this and get ready for bed.  Tomorrow’s plan is to head for the Mall of America in the morning and spend the day there.   Arkham Nights doesn’t officially start until around 4 or 5 PM, so we’ve got time.   I eagerly anticipate the bag of goodies that awaits and hope that I can get a chance to play the new Mansions of Madness game.  Tomorrow I’ll know a lot more after I see the event center.

Stay Tuned….

  1. That’s always a tricky choice, isn’t it?, when to soldier on or turn back. Thanks for keeping on the path. I can’t wait to read the rest of the posts. And I won’t. I’ll go read them now…
