Earlier today Gary Games and legendary Magic: The Gathering creator, Richard Garfield, announced they had a new digital collectable card game up their sleeves and were taking the project, known as SolForge, to Kickstarter for funding. Gary Games has already ported it’s best selling Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer to mobile devices so they certainly have experience with online card games. Specific details regarding actual gameplay are a wee bit sketchy at this point but Elliott and I have already arranged a sit down with Justin Gary at the upcoming Gen Con (as well as a demo) so we’ll bring you the full scoop long before the project completes its Kickstarter run.
From Gary Games:
Gary Games, the gaming company behind the popular board game and iOS game, Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer, is partnering with Magic: The Gathering creator, Dr. Richard Garfield, to develop a revolutionary new digital collectable game (DCG), SolForge. Gary Games and Dr. Garfield launched a Kickstarter campaign on August 1 to help fund the development of this brand new game.
“We’re thrilled to be working with Dr. Garfield, who is such an inspiration and legend to the industry. He was the reason why I got into professional gaming,” said Gary Games founder and CEO, Justin Gary. “I couldn’t be more proud and excited about SolForge.”
Combining the strategy and depth of a traditional TCG with the convenience and ease of use of an online and mobile gaming platform, SolForge will utilize the best of both to create a brand new gaming experience. In a major shift from traditional digital trading card games, the core mechanic of SolForge will be card transformation, where players’ cards will actually change and level up as they are played. The card’s powers will grow, the art will change, and players can watch the transformations happen in game.
In addition to transforming cards, SolForge will offer players a robust single-player campaign where their actions in game can directly impact the story of the world. In SolForge’s fully-featured Player vs. Player (PvP) mode, players can challenge friends to matches in a variety of game play formats. There will also be tournaments that will feature different deck building requirements to test the mettle of even the best players. SolForge will launch initially on the iOS with plans to launch on other platforms (Android, PC, etc.) in the future.
“I’ve been thinking about making an electronic trading card game for about 20 years, and the technology has only just now caught up. And I knew that Justin and Gary Games were the right team to make the game after I played and fell in love with Ascension,” said Dr. Garfield. “I’m really pleased with how SolForge is developing and am very excited about the opportunity for fans to get involved in this development phase through Kickstarter.”
As part of Gary Games’ Kickstarter campaign to fund SolForge, Gary Games and Dr. Garfield will be providing supporters access to the game’s beta test, a unique Kickstarter-only Avatar to show off support in-game and five free booster packs to start off the card collection when the game goes live to all backers who pledge just $15 toward the release of the brand new game. Supporters who contribute $2,500 or more will have the rare opportunity to have dinner with Dr. Garfield and the Gary Games team, as well as join them for Gen Con Indy 2013.
“We have a lot of ambitious goals with SolForge and with our Kickstarter. One of our main stretch goals is to bring SolForge to other mobile platforms, opening the game to as many players as possible,” added Gary.
All Gary Games designs feature high quality art and in-depth game strategy that offer a dynamic and fast paced play experience where players can react and adjust their strategies accordingly. SolForge will be the next evolution of the Gary Games brand, offering players a truly unique digital trading card game.
