Original Wolverine Debut Artwork Heads to Auction

Originally believed long lost, the full page artwork depicting Wolverine’s first appearance in Incredible Hulk #180 has surfaced and is going to auction this May to benefit the Hero Initiative. The Associated Press is reporting Herb Trimpe’s artwork, which was believed to have gone the way of many original comic book art, was actually in possession of a collector since 1983 when the unnamed person received the page during a 1983 visit with the artist.

While the debut issue currently brings about $400 in near mint condition, the followup issue is the real money maker as it currently carries a price tag around $1800 in NM. The May 16th auction, through Heritage Auctions, will benefit the Hero Initiative with a majority of the after-tax proceeds going to the non-profit known for helping comic artists in times of need.
