Planet Stories Fall 1947Earlier this week I shared a tale from Ray Bradbury and tonight we return to the author once again. This is another case of a story with all the trappings of science fiction, rockets, Mars, planetary explorers, Martians, which turns out to truly be a spook tale as opposed to SF

Ray Bradbury’s tales were on a wide spectrum of radio programs across the years but interestingly enough it was famed Radio writer, director, and producer who got Bradbury’s career moving. Bradbury was a fan of Norman Corwin and took the opportunity to write him a letter, enclosing a sample of his own work. He wrote that he’d like to take Corwin to lunch sometime. After reading the material, Corwin contacted Bradbury and said, “You’re not taking me to lunch. I’m taking you to dinner!” A lifelong deep friendship was born. Corwin suggested that Bradbury take his Martian short stories and try to compile them into one manuscript. This, of course, became The Martian Chronicles and launched Ray Bradbury on a magnificent journey as a writer.

Tonight’s story comes from The Martian Chronicles. It’s Mars is Heaven as it aired on Dimension X July 7th, 1950.

So turn out the lights and give a listen.

TGG Spooktacular 2021 - Dimension X: Mars is Heaven (1950)

On a quick side note, most visitors to TGG probably don’t know I ran an old time radio website quite a few years back and I have tens of thousands of radio shows in my collection. Each of the programs I’ll share during the Spooktacular have had their audio personally cleaned up by me to remove many of the pops, crackles, and hisses so common with old time radio recordings. These aren’t pristine by any means but keep in mind the original broadcasts you’ll be hearing are anywhere from fifty to eighty years old…
