A reprint of the award-winning American Civil War game A Most Fearful Sacrifice second edition is now on Kickstarter from Flying Pig Games. Designed by my pal Hermann Luttmann, the game focuses on all three days of the Battle of Gettysburg. A Most Fearful Sacrifice is for two to four players, ages 14+, and plays in an hour or more – or far more depending on the scenario! The Kickstarter for the new reprint is near it’s funding goal and you can save $40.00 of the retail price by reserving a copy for a $95.00 pledge through March 26. Expected delivery is April 2025.
About the project:
It’s early on July 1st, 1863, and Union Brigadier General John Buford’s 1st Reserve Cavalry Division is deployed to the west of the town of Gettysburg battling unidentified Confederate infantry advancing on the town. All morning long, the men in gray have pressured the Union cavalry. Help finally arrives in the form of I Corps commander Major Gen. John Reynolds. He rides up to the Lutheran Seminary, where Buford is directing the battle from its cupola. Reynolds calls to Buford, “What goes, John?”. The cavalryman simply points to the long lines of advancing Confederates and says, “The Devil’s to pay!”. Reynolds then asks, “Can you hold?”, to which Buford responds, “I reckon I can.” Reynolds ends the exchange with, “Let’s ride out and see all about it”. And with that rather brief, mundane conversation began one of the most important and iconic military engagements in history – the Battle of Gettysburg.
Step into history with “A Most Fearful Sacrifice” (AMFS) 2nd Edition – a tabletop wargame that plunges you into the heart of the Battle of Gettysburg. Designed by Hermann Luttmann and set against the backdrop of July 1st, 1863, this edition captures the intensity of Union this 3-day American Civil War battle that decided the fate of this divided nation.
What’s New in the 2nd Edition?
To be clear, this is a reprint of the 2nd Edition of this popular game. The second edition boasts significant enhancements over the original game based on player feedback. Rule revisions, expanded (and larger) Player Aid Cards (Combat Results Table, Terrain Effects Chart, Close Fight/Combat Event, and Sequence of Play cards), and improved scenarios make this edition an immersive and refined gaming experience.
BONUS!
This edition also includes two bonus scenarios not included in the original game. They are:
- The Long Road. Everyone knows that Lee hung around on July 4th, hoping that Meade would attack. It never happened, but in this variant it will. Meade attacks is a complete Day #4 scenario, stuffed full of “what ifs” like rain, force location, and more.
- Summer Thunder. A free-for-all scenario in which opposing players pick when and where their forces will enter, and you game the most intense meeting engagement in American history.
