After countless delays and production issues we may finally see Catalyst Game Labs bring the aerial dreadnaught game Leviathans to store shelves. Obviously a few copies were available for purchase at this year’s Origins but not in the numbers anyone would consider an official launch. The company is now claiming a full print run should be on the horizon; as early as late August. Personally, I feel the numerous issues the title has faced will be a serious problem as momentum for the game has practically dried up and Spartan Games with their excellent (and quite affordable) steampunk-ish Dystopian Wars will have no doubt by now stolen much of Leviathans’ thunder. There was almost no buzz about the game at Origins, even though it was available at the show, and Catalyst devoted much less dealer space to the game than in 2011, so we’ll have to wait to see if the title has any legs or not…

From the Catalyst Leviathan blog:

I know…I can hear it now: “Didn’t you guys launch at Origins?” Well…not really. We managed to sell some copies, which was fantastic. But we literally flew the copies in for the show. So no, not a launch…let’s call that the sea trials.

Instead, August 2012 will be the official launch of Leviathans into the cobalt dome!

Why August, you ask? Well, Gen Con of course! Unless a ship sinks or train derails (it is Leviathans, after all), we can announce that it will be at Gen Con! While there won’t be an unlimited number, we’re working hard to ensure there’ll be very respectable piles of the Core Box Set each day to satiate the desire. However, it will be limited and it will be first come first serve…line up early and rush the gunwales to grab the loot!

While we don’t have a Street Date yet (you know how we hate giving that out until it’s actually in our warehouse), we feel confident in saying the Core Box Set should be on store shelves by the end of August.

  1. On the other hand, Leviathans seems to have a lot more tactical depth than Dystopian Wars, plus it is played on a hex field, so you don’t have to mess around with tape measures and turn gauges. The game could be a nice combination of board war game and miniature game.

  2. I’d love to see the game in action myself Andy, as I dig anything with a naval flavor. Once I get my hands on a copy I’ll be sure to give the scoop on the game as it does look pretty interesting.
