A new Deep Print Games and Pegasus Spiele release, torn directly from today’s headlines, is arriving early next year. In Kyoto, designed by Sabine Harrer and Johannes Krenner, players take the roles of global delegates at the conference as they aim to address climate change while also keeping their economies intact. The game is for three to six players, ages 10+, plays in around 30 to 45 minutes, and should carry an MSRP of around $30.00 when it arrives in Q1 2021.
From Pegasus:
Welcome to the Climate Change Conference in Kyoto! As representatives of major countries, you discuss some very unsettling studies which claim that the world is on the brink of environmental collapse. Surely you will do all that you can to save the planet, right? Absolutely… as long as you can ensure that your country’s wealth is preserved… Once all studies have been reviewed, the country that best maintained its wealth wins. Beware though, if the impending damage to the planet becomes too severe, the conference fails immediately and the greediest country automatically loses.
Kyoto takes players straight into one of the burning issues of our time: climate change — and not with a wagging finger, but by putting them into the shoes of the decision makers.
As delegates from different countries, players face a few quick rounds of negotiation at a climate conference. Together, they try to hit reduction targets and provide the needed funding, knowing that each round they fail to do so they inflict severe damage on the planet. But bent on preserving their own country’s wealth and following their secret agendas, none of them may be eager to give more than absolutely necessary. After all, the winner will be whoever best preserves their wealth…unless the impending damage to earth becomes too severe, in which case the conference fails immediately and the greediest player can’t win.
