A new board game hit Kickstarter yesterday for Radical 8 Games. Die of the Dead is inspired by the Dia de Muertos holiday as players will attempt to assist the souls of the dead to return to the land of the living for the day. The project is completely funded and the game is for two to five players and plays in around 45 minutes. You can reserve a copy of the game and unlocked stretch goals for a $36.00 pledge through September 17th and expected delivery is September of next year.
From Radical 8:
In Die of the Dead, players play as friendly spirits, helping guide souls back to the land of the living to celebrate Dia de Muertos. The first player to have one of their souls reach the land of the living wins!
Welcome to the journey from the world of the dead to the land of the living…
It’s the Day of the Dead and players take the roles of friendly spirits guiding souls from Mictlán, the world of the dead, to the land of the living. The first player to guide souls up the 9 levels back to the land of the living is the winner.
To do this players will choose, manipulate and roll caskets containing dice representing souls. They will have Candles, Incense, Marigolds and the Bread of the Dead to help them, but need to hope for a little luck.
Die of the Dead has beautiful Mexican art inspired by the tales and culture surrounding Dia de Muertos. Care has been taken to make the game as fun as possible whilst staying respectful to its roots.
We have worked with a cultural consultant and a Mexican artist to really help bring Dia de Muertos to the table and embed the beauty and culture within the game. This has resulted in amazing components, such as our four gorgeous Dia de Muertos caskets, and the 3D nine-step staircase, showing the levels the souls travel on from the World of the Dead to the Land of the Living; as well as papel picado player boards, ofrenda tokens and custom calavera dice. All of these will be used by players as they add souls to the caskets, move the caskets towards the steps, and ascend the steps to the land of the living. Die of the Dead is fully playtested and print ready, so we will be able to get it in people’s hands by Dia de Muertos 2021!
