For those of us introduced to Dungeons & Dragons long before the property became a gaming juggernaut, many first learned about D&D through the original small boxed, 1974 three book edition. Before anyone starts adding more years to my actual age, I had my first experience with D&D through the 1978 AD&D books… Yet, one of our local (and now long gone) Chicago FLGSs still carried the original box set and I scooped up a copy. Sorry to say, as is the case with hundreds of games I owned in my teens and twenties, that edition is long gone from my collection but still fondly looked back upon. This November Wizards of the Coast will release a premium seven book set they’re calling the “White Box” edition of the original rules and it’s aimed mainly at the collector market. Or, at least those like me who love looking back at the games which planted the seeds of a life long love with the hobby. This November you’ll be able to score this White Box for an MSRP of $149.95.
From Wizards of the Coast:
A premium, deluxe edition of the Original D&D “White Box”!
The original Dungeons & Dragons boxed set was published by TSR, Inc. in 1974 and was the very first roleplaying game, introducing concepts that have persisted throughout later editions. It included three small rules booklets in a white box.
This deluxe, premium reprint of the original “White Box” features new packaging and includes the following seven booklets (plus, reference sheets):
- Volume 1: Men & Magic
- Volume 2: Monsters & Treasure
- Volume 3: Underworld & Wilderness Adventures
- Supplement I: Greyhawk
- Supplement II: Blackmoor
- Supplement III: Eldritch Wizardry
- Supplement IV: Gods, Demi-Gods & Heroes
Each booklet features new cover art but is otherwise a faithful reproduction of the original, including original interior art.
