Star Trek Into Darkness had a big premiere but not as large as industry experts and Paramount expected. The movie debuted with a four day total of $84.1 million – solid numbers in themselves – although well off the high projection of $100 million. J.J. Abram’s first Star Trek film actually scored better three day numbers than the sequel ($75.2 million as opposed to $70.6 million) although the competition in 2009 was quite a bit weaker than STID’s current cineplex foes Iron Man 3 and The Great Gatsby. what makes these numbers even more interesting is the fact ticket prices have risen in the last four years and Into Darkness also opened in more than double the number of pricier ticketed IMAX theaters than the first Star Trek (336 compared to 138) proving the follow up is pulling in nowhere near the expected tally of film-goers.
No need to shed tears though as Into Darkness should more than make up the slack from the domestic take with the numbers from the international box office.
