One of the most popular – and longest running – radio programs devoted to stories which nearly always featured a slow burn was Suspense. For over twenty years some of the most famous radio spook stories aired on the series, although Suspense didn’t make too many forays into horror or science fiction until the later part of its run. While a few early shows began with a supernatural premise the payoff usually turned out to be something very earthly.
In Ghost Hunt we meet radio disk jockey Smiley Smith (played by Ralph Edwards) who’s to join a paranormal investigator, Dr. Reed (Joseph Kearns), to spend the night in a house known as “The Death Trap.” Smith expects to record the evening as a stunt for his show but is there something in the house which has compelled four people to commit suicide there?
And if you’re wondering, it IS the same Ralph Edwards as you’ve seen in the credits of dozens of TV shows over the decades sporting “A Ralph Edwards Production.”
From June 23rd, 1949 here’s Ghost Hunt!
