Fantasy Flight Games has announced a new participant in their Living Card Games line, Lord of the Rings: The Card Game. Building upon the story driven mechanic introduced in Call of Cthulhu LCG, this new game is quest centric. It is a Cooperative Living Card Game, the first of its kind I believe. There are quests provided, and within these quests lie various scenarios and challenges that differ from game to game that the players must face and defeat in order to succeed in their quest. The players can proceed to the next quest and string them all together to provide a complete adventure.
Here is what FFG has to say about the new game:
The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game is a cooperative card game that puts 1-2 players (or up to four with two Core Sets!) in control of the most powerful characters and artifacts of Middle-earth. Players will select heroes, gather allies, acquire artifacts, and coordinate their efforts to face Middle-earth’s most dangerous fiends. By cooperating to overcome the obstacles drawn from the encounter deck, you will complete the quest before you and claim victory!
The Core Set includes 226 cards that can be used to assemble a wide variety of decks right out of the box. Included are three perilous quests that, along with countless combinations of settings and enemies, offer near-limitless replayability.
The game is designed for 1-2 players, but more can be added with the addition of more core sets. Since it is an LCG, you are assured of additional adventure packs to be released monthly from FFG, with 60 cards each!
The game’s anticipated release is this winter.
