The news about the Forgotten Planet game coming this month from Rio Grande got me to thinking about the movie Forbidden Planet. I’m not old enough to have seen it on the big screen, but I have seen it on video and television many times.
Forbidden Planet is classic Science Fiction. Starring Walter Pidgeon, Leslie Nielsen, and the beautiful Anne Francis. I can’t watch it without thinking of Leslie Nielsen saying “I am serious, and don’t call me Shirley”.
This is the movie that introduced us to Robby the Robot, a symbol of classic sci-fi (You can order your own Robby the Robot at Hammacher Schlemmer. I’ll never forget the first time I saw the movie, I thought I would laugh myself sick. It is so 1950’s that it is truly a delight to watch. If you have not seen it, I recommend you grab some microwave popcorn and give it a go. Make sure to listen for these two classic lines:
“It looks like every bone in his body has been broken, but I don’t think that’s what killed him.”
“I think I’ll go give myself an oil job.”
Oh, and you might recognize Richard Anderson too, from another classic show of my youth, The Six Million Dollar Man.
